Yes, to answer you, my friend, it does matter that the possible future leader of the most powerful and influential country in the world has ties to an anti-American, radical, home-grown terrorist. It does matter that even though he may not have initially not know the sorted past of everyone he has ever crossed paths with that this man, and his past, was indeed known to him and he chose to continue a relationship with him. No, it is not true that their relationship was a simple wave across the street, while shuffling back inside on occasional nights after dragging out the garbage cans as neighbors sometimes do. Yes, this is the presidency. Yes, there is a higher standard, and even if you can justify the past transgressions as we have in the past for acquaintances, family, drug use and the like, you cannot lie about it... you can try to hide, spin, circumvent as politicians do, but you can't lie.
Now, did he lie? No, they were neighbors. But what else? Weren't they colleagues? Didn't their wives work together? Why hide? America doesn't hide, or maybe he doesn't get it. Winning at all costs, costs us all. What ever happened to Honor, Courage, and Commitment? I guess I need to go find a Marine for that.
